7 adults, 3 children found dead after Pennsylvania house fire

Preparedness is key, as accidents can occur, so it is always important to have a fire escape plan in the event of an emergency. Practice your fire escape plan, make sure everyone in your home knows what to do and keep your designated exits clear, clutter-free and accessible at all times to minimize damage and potentially save lives. President Biden called New York City Mayor Eric Adams to extend his support on Monday as the city reels after a major fire impacted an apartment building in the Bronx borough, leaving at least 17 dead.

minutes, 30 seconds: Flashover!

Earlier today, fire officials said smoke detectors in the building did not operate during today's fire. Many common household chemicals, including gasoline, are highly flammable if kept or used with improper caution. These should be stored in their original containers (with the warning and proper use labels intact), and sealed properly at all times. Keep chemicals and gasoline far away from heat, electrical sources, furnaces, pilot lights and other chemicals with which they could cause flames, including grease.

The Escape Plan: Test Your Fire Safety Skills

The USFA is committed to providing the best and most current information on the U.S. fire problem and continually examines data received from participating fire departments and the analytical methods used to fulfill this goal. Because of this commitment, data collection strategies and methodological changes are possible and do occur. Previous estimates on specific issues (or similar issues) may have used different methodologies or data definitions and, therefore, may not be directly comparable to current estimates.

Next Up In Home Safety

The fire is now under control, a law enforcement official said earlier today, but investigators have not yet been able to get inside the home. At least one of the apartment units in the home where a fatal fire broke out in Philadelphia was inspected in May 2021, according to a representative from the Philadelphia Housing Authority. First lady Jill Biden also tweeted her sympathy, saying, "My heart is with the families and loved ones of the victims of the tragic fire in Philadelphia."

The good news is that most accidental house fires can be avoided with proper education on the causes of house fires and how to practice fire safety. Identifying potential risks within your home and eliminating potential sources that could stoke and spread flames—heat, oxygen and fuel—can help lower the chance of a house fire. Previously, Dinesh Indala, senior executive vice president of operations for the PHA, said officials determined six smoke detectors and three carbon monoxide detectors were functional during that inspection.

His children and the other young victims were visiting their aunt and uncle’s home for swimming and other summertime fun, he said, adding that 13 dogs were also in the two-story home. The landlord has offered to pay for 140 hotel rooms for all those who are displaced, and is also offering some housing unit alternatives at other properties to families whose unit is no longer habitable, said Torres. He also said the investigation would be looking into whether the alarm system went off regularly or if individuals smoking in hallways set off the alarms, among other potential issues. Wague lives on the third floor of the building with his eight children, who range in age from 6 months to 18 years old.

Christina Farrell, first deputy commissioner of the NYC emergency management department, said that none of the apartments were inhabited last night. A total of 26 people lived in the three-story home that suffered a fatal fire Wednesday, with eight people living on the first floor and 18 people living on the second and third floors, fire officials said. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire. If you are insured, contact your insurance company for detailed instructions on protecting your property, conducting inventory and contacting fire damage restoration companies. Fire estimate summaries present basic data on the size and status of the fire problem in the U.S. as depicted through data reported to the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System from incidents reported by local response agencies. Each Fire Estimate Summary addresses the size of the specific fire or fire-related issue and highlights important trends in the data.

When the smoky layer inches down to the top part of a doorway, an open window or a vent, it quickly streams out of the room. Then the poisonous smoke and heated air travels through hallways and up stairwells to the second floor. It only takes 30 seconds for a small flame to turn into a full-blown life-threatening fire.

After a major fire, dry wall is left dehydrated and crumbling and will need to be replaced. Given the high temperatures of large fires, most if not all of the home furnishings may be rendered unusable. Small grease fires may be extinguished with a fast response of turning off the heat, smothering the fire with a metal lid or sprinkling baking soda or salt on the flames. Use a fire extinguisher if available, though the cleanup of chemicals will be extensive.

The bodies of six people were recovered from a Pennsylvania home that was destroyed in a fire during a gunfight with police this week, the district attorney said Friday. Baker grabbed a hose and air pack, and started pouring water on the fire, desperate to make his way inside and calling out to his son. His chief realized whose house it was, and fellow firefighters escorted Baker back to the firehouse.

Everything in the room bursts into flames—wood dining table, wood and upholstered chairs, cookbooks, curtains and wall decorations. The oxygen in the room is virtually sucked out (used up during the rapid combustion); glass windows shatter. The upstairs fills with thick, hot, noxious smoke and the stairwell is impassible. When you have flashover in a room, temperatures can reach up to 1,400 degrees F—now, all of the other rooms in the house are severely at risk.

By the time a fire occurs, it is highly dangerous and difficult to extinguish. They will also look into enforcement of self-closing doors, which is already required in New York City, they said. At least 13 people, including children, were killed in the fire that broke out at a three-story Philadelphia home Wednesday morning.

If smoking must occur, it is safest to do so outdoors, followed by smoking over a sink or an ashtray to prevent embers from catching.

But his family wasn’t able to run out of the building because there was so much smoke, he said. Terrified, they waited in a neighbor’s apartment until firefighters arrived to escort them out 15 to 30 minutes later. The Bronx fire on Sunday that killed at least 17 people, including eight children, is the second-most deadly US home fire in nearly 40 years, according to the National Fire Protection Association. At least 13 people have died after a fire broke out at the three-story home that was converted into apartments, officials said. Whether or not your house will be livable after a major fire will depend on many factors, and you will need to obtain permission from the Fire Marshall to reenter your home.

A family member on Thursday identified the parents of the three children as Britni McLaughlin-Le, 37, and Xuong Le, 40. A torso was found along with the firearm, and tests will be done to determine if it is that of the suspect, who was the uncle of at least one of the victims. Images from the scene show the almost total destruction of the house, with just its external walls remaining. Officials said that firefighters were unable to stop the blaze because of the active shooter situation. One was shot in the leg, and the other was shot in the forearm, Stollsteimer said.

Fire and police officials said the structure was a home converted into apartments. Indala also said the housing authority was not aware 26 people were living in the building and they are working with the Department of Licenses and Inspections to determine how many people were allowed to live there. Jeremiah reiterated in the statement posted on Twitter that all of the smoke detectors were working properly when the house was inspected in May 2021. Greases, whether produced by food or cooking with oil, are highly flammable and can ignite even without direct contact with flames. Keeping your oven, stove and cookware clean of grease and debris buildup can prevent spontaneous combustion. If a grease fire does occur, do not try to extinguish it with water, as this could cause the hot grease to explode.

At least 13 people were killed in the fire Wednesday morning at the three-story home that was converted into apartments. There were four smoke detectors in the row home that caught fire Wednesday morning, but none of the operated, Philadelphia Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said at a news conference. According to property records obtained by CNN, the building where the deadly house fire occurred was owned by the Philadelphia Housing Authority. The previous inspection on the B unit was on Sept. 28, 2019, where they “had to replace smoke detectors,” according to Indala.

As the fire grows higher and hotter, more flammable objects and furnishings will ignite from spreading flames, including wooden cabinets and countertops, wallpaper, hanging baskets, and curtains. With the fire moving beyond the stovetop and other areas beginning to burn, a denser plume of hot air and smoke rises and spreads across the ceiling. The Electrical Safety Foundation reports that 65% of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no working smoke detectors. ESFI recommends smoke detectors should be installed on every level of the home, inside every bedroom and outside every sleeping area. Test your smoke detectors (and your carbon monoxide detectors simultaneously) at minimum twice per year, including replacing the batteries at each inspection, and replace any devices that are more than seven years old.

Wague, an Uber driver who immigrated to the United States from Mali in 2000, said the fire burned everything in his family’s apartment. The death tolls from both fires places them in the top 10 residential fires since 1980, according to the association. CNN has reached out to the housing authority for comment, and the authority said it would be holding a press conference shortly.

How a House Fire Spreads

Indala said most recent inspection of the B unit of the residence was done on May 5, adding that at that time there were six smoke detectors and three carbon monoxide detectors working. At that time, it was determined six smoke detectors and three carbon monoxide detectors were functional, said Dinesh Indala, senior executive vice president of operations for the Philadelphia Housing Authority. As the flames intensify, the smoke and hot air rising off the fire are more than 190 degrees F.

Heat from the fire radiates to other parts of the kitchen, heating up tables, chairs, shelves, and cookbooks. House fires related to heating appliances can happen at any time, though they are unsurprisingly more common between November and March. Between 2015 and 2019, data from the NFPA shows that heating equipment resulted in the second leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries and was the third leading cause of home fire deaths and direct property damage. The National Fire Protection Association also reports that heating equipment is the second-leading cause of US home fires and the third-leading cause of home fire deaths and injuries.

Plus, fires generate highly poisonous gases, including carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide (created when insulation, carpets, clothing, and plastics burn). What’s most alarming is that home fires have become more dangerous and devastating recently because of the flammability of the materials in the house. Thirty years ago, you had on average about 14 to 17 minutes to escape a house fire, according to Consumer Safety Director John Drengenberg of Underwriters Laboratories (UL). “Today, with the prevalence of synthetic materials in the home, occupants have roughly 2 to 3 minutes to get out,” said Drengenberg.

Follow along to learn how you can best protect your home, your loved ones, and your own life. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment are a leading cause of home structure fires and are often the result of inadequate, loose or faulty electrical connections. Heating devices are highly combustible and should never be left running unattended. Always read and follow the instructions precisely for any type of heating device and routinely check that it is in good condition before use. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking was—by far—the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States between 2015 and 2019, resulting in nearly half of all accidental house fires. Here are the top five causes of house fires and how to prevent them from happening to keep you and your home safe.

“Our assumption is that they were shot by gunfire and there was a fire set, but we have no idea whether or not that’s true,” Stollsteimer said. Smoking materials have been the leading cause of home fire deaths for decades, according to the NFPA. That’s all that I was thinking about, getting in to them,” Baker, 57, said in a phone interview with the AP. The adults were identified by state police as Dale Baker, 19; Star Baker 22; David Daubert Sr., 79; Brian Daubert, 42; Shannon Daubert, 45; Laura Daubert, 47; and Marian Slusser, 54. Fadera said he’s spoken with Gambians who lived in the building and were able to escape.

Candles, fireworks, decorative lighting on Christmas trees, matches, lighters and beyond can be culprits of dangerous fire accidents in and around your home without due diligence. Just like all open flames or combustible heat sources, these should never be unsupervised or unattended. Candles should be placed on a non-flammable surface at least 12 inches away from other flammable items and kept away from playful children or accidental knocking over, and never left aflame while sleeping. Hire a qualified electrician to perform a routine annual inspection of your home electrical system, safely perform repairs and improvements and recommend advanced new safety devices and protection for peace of mind. Portable cooking appliances that produce heat, including toasters and electric griddles, should also never be left unattended while in use. Remember to let these items cool completely before storing them away, keep them clean of crumb and grease buildup (both inside and outside the appliance) and keep them unplugged and in the off position while not in use.

Local leaders and First lady Jill Biden are expressing their condolences and mourning the loss of 13 people killed in a Philadelphia house fire on Wednesday, calling the tragedy "heartbreaking." Tests will also determine if the victims were alive or dead when the fire was set. The house will need to be destroyed to make the area safe, Stollsteimer said. Based on information from the grandparents of the Le family, investigators believe the suspect shot at least one of his nieces, “which is unbelievable to be able to say,” Stollsteimer said. Shelby is an editor with an affinity for covering home improvement and repair, design and real estate trends.

A malfunctioning electric space heater in a bedroom was the source of the apartment building fire, New York Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. The type of construction materials used to build your home will influence the severity of damage. Synthetics like polyurethane, polystyrene, and PVC used in glues, insulation, and plumbing will auto-ignite at temps between 850 and 1075 degrees. At 1000 degrees F, steel plates used in engineered roof trusses will start to buckle and they lose 40 percent of their load-carrying capacity. Newer homes built with engineered wood can experience floor collapse in as little as 6 minutes. If you’re still in the room, this hot, smoky air can instantly burn the inside of your breathing passages.

Firefighters confronted “heavy fire” in the kitchen area toward the front of the second floor, and there was an open stairwell to the third floor, he said. The official said that once the building is deemed safe, investigators will be able to enter. Investigators are waiting for special equipment to be brought to the scene of the fatal house fire in Philadelphia to work on the structure, according to a law enforcement official.

Asked if the investigation was criminal in nature, state police said only that detectives want to determine the origin of the fire. One of the victims was an off-duty firefighter who was asleep in the house at the time, the Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Department said. Once you are physically safe, take time to ensure your family’s emotional and financial well-being. Many of the apartments will be able to be occupied as the week goes on, but many may not be able to be inhabited for quite some time, she said. He said the situation on the 15th floor was particularly “untenable,” due the level of smoke that billowed from the stairwell. The fire itself, he said, was contained to the hallway just outside the two-story apartment, but the smoke traveled causing death and serious injuries.

Hello Kitty Cake Roll A step by step recipe with a template

simple hello kitty cake design

Remember to be sparing with the water, as too much can make the fondant sticky and cause it to lose its shape. While having specialized tools can make the process easier, don’t let a lack of equipment deter you from creating a stunning Hello Kitty cake. Many fondant techniques can be achieved with simple household items.

I recommend using food color paste to add color to the dough. Be conservative because it’s easier to add than remove. To make it smooth, I dipped my frosting knife in a glass of milk frequently. I then did all the lighter pink along the sides and around her face on top.

The Hello Kitty Birthday Cake

On the template, where Hello Kitty’s bow will go, place some dough down so there is something for the bow to lean on. Form two large pink triangles with soft “corners” and place. Form a larger pink flat circle to hold together the bow. If it doesn’t attach, add a little water using a food only brush. Next, tint each portion of dough with food coloring and knead until the coloring is evenly incorporated. Color as you go, little by little until you get the desired color shade.

Then place in the refrigerator for minutes to help the buttercream firm. Use template and place under a piece of parchment paper. Make two small black lines, curve the lines and place over the parchment. Then flip and place this on top of the plain face and peel away once adhered.

When the paste is not completely smooth, piping tips will be clogged and make it difficult to draw designs on parchment paper. Fondant and Food Coloring

If you love cute and vintage cake designs, you’re going to adore this vintage Hello Kitty cake. These 4 Hello Kitty cake designs will be perfectly suited to experienced cake decorators. To recreate these beautiful fondant flowers, all you have to do is use flower molds, which are quite beginner-friendly. However, you’ll need more work to make your cute fondant Hello Kitty, but if you don’t know where to begin, you can follow this fondant Hello Kitty tutorial.

The process of decorating a Hello Kitty cake allows for creativity and attention to detail, making it a delightful project for both beginner and experienced bakers. A smooth surface is essential for creating a polished and professional-looking cake. Start by ensuring your cake is level and evenly baked. Once cooled, apply a thin layer of buttercream frosting to seal in any crumbs and create a smooth base. Then, using a fondant smoother, gently press and smooth the fondant over the cake. Work slowly and methodically, smoothing out any wrinkles or air bubbles as you go.

Steps

This very delicate and dainty-looking two-tier cake has the softest pastel tones smeared on its white buttercream frosting. Wafer paper adorns it diagonally on one side while small sugar flowers are planted here and there. This mousse cake, on the other hand, is shaped like Hello Kitty’s head.

To make your final presentation even more special, consider adding some personal touches to enhance the overall look of your Hello Kitty cake. This could include adding additional decor such as edible flowers, sugar butterflies, or even custom-made signage that fits with the occasion for which the cake is being presented. One of the most important aspects of presenting a decorated cake is choosing the right display for it. Consider using a cake stand or platter that complements the theme of the Hello Kitty design.

Finally, decorate with jelly beans for the eyes and nose, black rope licorice for the whiskers, and red fruit tape for the bow. For instructions on how to make your own cakes and fondant, read on. Another helpful tip is to practice piping frosting on a separate surface before you decorate the actual cake. This will give you a chance to get comfortable with piping techniques and ensure that your hand is steady when creating intricate details like whiskers and bows.

The bottom cake was chocolate, because the rest of us like chocolate a whole lot. Of course, Lil' Foodies favorite part was eating the pink frosting. Lil' Foodie (my daughter) isn't really into that many characters, but she does love Hello Kitty stuff. It must be something about the cuteness of the character that appeals to her. So a Hello Kitty Birthday Cake seemed a no-brainer as the feature of her small belated birthday celebration. You see, on her actual birthday Lil' Foodie was quite ill.

In order to design a website that will accurately depict your brand aspirations and effectively deliver on your business objectives, we first take time to get to know you, your industry, and your audience. Today, two other factors that play substantial roles in consumers’ decision making are past customers’ reviews and other credible recommendations about a product or service. Even though these two factors are not 100% unbiased, they are more reliable in real time than an impression of a brand. And that is where reputation management plays an essential role in your business. No matter whether your business is a B2C or B2B, you are still dealing with humans who will make decisions on purchases and providers. And, as humans, we like to socialize; thus, social media marketing is another pillar that should be in your digital marketing campaign to some degree.

Or they’re grinding our classes to a halt and we’re not able to function as a University. But there are also communities that rely on people being able to trust each other and being able to carry out their classes and their academic endeavors as a collective so they can learn from one another. Students who feel strongly about the Palestinian cause feel like the point is disruption, that something so big, and immediate, and urgent is happening that they need to get in the faces of their professors, and their administrators, and their fellow students. Well, I don’t think it’s just limited to college campuses. We have seen intense feelings about this conflict play out in Hollywood. We’ve seen them in our politics in all kinds of interesting ways.

In response to Hamas’s video, Rachel issued a video of her own, in which she spoke directly to her son. So the only way we’re going to be able to move forward is if you will respect our rules and we’ll respect your point of view. Something is not connecting with those two points of view. And as if that’s not hard enough, you then have Congress and the political system with its own agenda coming in and putting its thumb on a scale of an already very difficult situation. There’s a video that goes viral of one of them shouting at Jewish students, go back to Poland, go back to Europe. What it seemed to evoke was the message that Hamas should murder those Jewish students.

But the primary point was this policy that they were referring to, which we later reported, was changed before the suspension. After the break, what all of this has looked like to a student on Columbia’s campus. Yeah, this big moment that tripped up her predecessors and cost them their jobs, it seems like she has cleared that hurdle and dispatched with the Congressional committee that could have been one of the biggest threats to her presidency.

But those videos are reaching members of Congress, the very same Republicans that Shafik had testified in front of just a few days before. And now they’re looking and saying, you have lost control of your campus, you’ve turned back on your word to us, and you need to resign. It was something truly unimaginable, over 100 students slash other individuals are arrested from our campus, forcefully removed. And although they were suspended, there was a feeling of traumatic event that has just happened to these students, but also this sense of like, OK, the worst of the worst that could have happened to us just happened. Then there started to be more public safety action and presence.

We don’t know if students are going to leave campus for the summer. But college campuses, at least in their most idealized form, are something special. They’re a place where students get to go for four years to think in big ways about moral questions, and political questions, and ideas that help shape the world they’re going to spend the rest of their lives in. Talha, Carlos, Elmer, Ron and more did a great job with our project.

Every aspect of interactions with clients is handled professionally from the first meeting. That reality, that taking a different tack that was supposed to be full of learnings and lessons from the stumbles of her peers, the fact that didn’t really work suggests that there’s something really intractable going on here. And I wonder how you’re thinking about this intractable situation that’s now arrived on these college campuses. The problem with that is that, over the weekend, a series of images start to emerge from on campus and just off of it of some really troubling anti-Semitic episodes. In one case, a guy holds up a poster in the middle of campus and points it towards a group of Jewish students who are counter protesting. And it says, I’m paraphrasing here, Hamas’ next targets.

When you want to give a new dimension to your home or spruce up an existing space with a home addition or finished basement, our expertise and commitment to customer satisfaction are second to none. Boss Design Center’s design-build approach combines interior design, architecture, and construction under one roof, ensuring the lowest cost, fastest time frame, and highest quality. And so as Isabella and her colleagues at the college newspaper see it, there’s this overall chilling effect that occurs.

Some students become fearful that if they participate in any demonstrations, they’re going to face disciplinary action. So fast forward now to April, when these student protesters learned that President Shafik is headed to Washington for her congressional testimony. It’s at this moment that they set out to build their encampment. But back on campus, some of the students and faculty who had been watching the hearing came away with a very different set of conclusions. To begin the design process, Boss’ Designer measures the existing structure and reviews property conditions.

This is “The Daily.” Today, the story of how Columbia University has become the epicenter of a growing showdown between student protesters, college administrators, and Congress over the war in Gaza and the limits of free speech. “Oh my god, here we go,” Carlos Osorio, a Toronto-based freelance photographer and proud Blue Jays fan, thought to himself as he followed the plane’s taxi to a hangar tarmac. “We’re gonna have the first pictures of Ohtani.” When the door opened, however, it was Canadian businessman and television celebrity Robert Herjavec who descended the steps. So fun, excellent food recommendations, very helpful and attentive. They are very fortunate to have such an amazing server. Plans were initially to keep the Dangerfield’s name and a similar theme, Donatell said.

New restaurant The Shakopee House has history in its walls

There is good news for fans of the lower-level rum bar. Rum Row will be moving to Chanhassen, to the backroom of the restaurant group's Tequila Butcher. "This move will allow us to keep our fun, tropical tiki bar alive in a beautiful space that won't flood and has a covered patio," Donatell wrote. Donatell and his team got in contact with Cumberbatch’s family and learned more about his life. He was a “rum runner” during prohibition, regularly traveling between the United States and the Caribbean. Shakopee House, a new supper club in town, has made menu and decor renovations to bring guests back in time to a 1940s-era supper club and speakeasy.

The restaurant should be fully remodeled by mid-November. After seven years in downtown Excelsior, Red Sauce Rebellion (205 Water St., Excelsior, redsaucerebellion.com) is closing. Oct. 7 will be the last day of service for this Italian spot, where chef/owner Eli Wollenzien put creative twists on classic dishes. The building has been sold to another restaurant group, according to a social media post from the restaurant, and its lease is ending at the end of the month. Sister restaurant Coalition, just a few doors down, will remain open.

"After surviving COVID and the mandated shutdowns that came with it, we thought we had made it through the darkest days hospitality would ever see. In many ways, this is worse." In the south building is Pimento Market, which will offer a curated selection of "gifts and goodies" from more than 20 mission-driven BIPOC vendors. I came here when it was Dangerfield and now came back to a new name restaurant (felt the same). The atmosphere was welcoming and the server was really nice.

In brighter news, Zhora Darling is now open in northeast Minneapolis (509 1st Av. NE., Mpls., zhoradarling.com). The bar and restaurant take over the former Red Stag Supperclub, now with neon lights and a couple of pool tables. The menu, designed by Five Leaves — a Brooklyn restaurant — offers small plates, salads and sandwiches, including one with grilled pineapple, a pickled beet and a sunny-side-up egg.

Proceeds from the final weekend of business will go to staff to support their transition to other employment. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s gonna just bring me to one? ’ (Khwice) brings me downstairs, leads me through the back rooms, knocks on one of the walls … and goes, ‘There used to be a tunnel.

Located in the pavilion's north building, it will be open seasonally. Donatell said for original supper clubs, most food was either French or Italian-influenced with some “Americanized” cuisine. The 100-plus-year-old building is crawling with history—a treasure trove of speakeasy lore and memories of a felonious past (literally, as the new owners found relics between the walls and behind bookshelves).

"So they didn't take too kindly to the prohibition rules." When owners started renovating the old Dangerfield's, they discovered a treasure of artifacts in the walls.

Today, forms of live entertainment, such as cabaret shows, burlesque-style brunches, and jazz performances, pay tribute to the riverside establishment’s storied history. Had lunch at Shakopee House for the first time since it changed from Dangerfield. It was okay, I did not notice much changes in the menu. The service was the best thing, my waitress was Lexi, she was friendly, kind and very attentive. Cumberbatch was a rum runner and a former bartender of the Mill Pond Club, the first restaurant to call the building home.

As with many historical supper clubs in the Midwest, somewhere along the line rum became all the rage. During last fall’s renovation on the former restaurant, Dangerfield’s, a century-old leather suitcase was discovered in the basement rafters. It belonged to a man named Lawrence H. Cumberbatch, a “rum runner” during Prohibition and former bartender in the building—hence the building’s Caribbean-themed basement tiki bar called Rum Row. Supper Clubs are popping up all over the Twin Cities. The newest addition is in Shakopee, in the former Dangerfield’s space. While the main floor of Shakopee House gives off 1920’s glam, the basement offers something quite unexpected.

But when construction began in June, he and his team made historical discoveries that inspired a new idea for the space. This restaurant space has been in Shakopee for around a century, once home to restaurants like The Millpond Club and a previous Shakopee House. Dangerfield’s owner Gus Khwice and staff more recently celebrated their restaurant’s 30th anniversary last December. Shakopee House, a brand new supper club, is taking over from Dangerfield’s.

Had the parmesan shrimp appetizer and fish and chips. Shakopee House hopes to continue this legacy of long-established and respected restaurants in the building. To Donatell’s knowledge, all of Dangerfield’s employees will continue with Shakopee House.

Interpretations of the cocktail recipes found in his suitcase will be drinks offered at the tiki bar. After struggling to get a bar to show a Gophers women's softball game this past spring, the idea for the Twin Cities' first women's sports bar was born. Stay up to date at abaroftheirown.com or follow them on social media. "You can tell he was passionate about what he had learned and his adventures and his journey," Donatell said.

All the patios located throughout the restaurant space will also be renovated to serve different purposes and match Shakopee House’s updates. Each room is designed to have a slightly different feel, Donatell said. The first room upon entering is meant to feel like a grand entryway with a hotel bar style. The private party room near the entryway has also been remodeled similarly. This is reflected in the updated decor and remodeling of the restaurant.

When the federal government came in and shut down all the illegal stuff that was happening in Shakopee, they put the gambling machines behind this wall and sealed it off,’” Donatell recalled. Additional findings within the building have included a moving bookshelf and decades of information gathered through the historical society. The restaurant is currently serving a bridge menu to help ease the transition into Shakopee House and see what menu items customers are gravitating toward. Remodeling has also taken place downstairs, where the Rum Row Basement Tiki Bar is being established. Rum Row centers around a tropical vacation feel and a bit of escapism, Donatell explained. The basement is expected to open in about two weeks.

"He put together recipes for cocktails. He had rum in there, he had post cards from his travels and his adventures. We used what we found and some of the stories from his family to create the rum row concept for the basement." Historical finds during construction included a leather travel case belonging to Lawrence H. Cumberbatch, a bartender who used to work in the building. Within the case were a number of postcards from his travels, maps, cocktail recipes and a collection of rum, gin and whiskey from the early 1900s.

The restaurant owner was able to figure out who’s briefcase it was and even spoke with his family. He was a rum-runner during prohibition who had dreams of opening is own bar. They’ve done it for him in the basement of Shakopee House. The supper club and tiki bar’s themes are heavily inspired by the building’s century-long history. Shakopee House CEO and co-owner Tony Donatell (pictured) and his team found historical relics during construction, including this leather travel case tucked away in the basement ceiling.

Chandeliers, new light fixtures, button back chairs, gold accents and additional decor choices have been added to embody this era. The Rum Row Basement Tiki Bar is inspired by Cumberbatch, who wanted to open a Caribbean-themed basement bar while working at the Millpond Club but passed away before he could do so. Owner Tony Donatell wrote in the announcement they would work to secure staff positions at his other restaurants where possible, noting some are currently short-staffed.

Beyond remodeling changes, Shakopee House’s new feel is also reflected in updated menus for both the supper club and tiki bar. The wait is over — the Malibu Barbie Cafe is opening Oct. 27 at the Mall of America (60 E. Broadway), and tickets are now available. Each reservation at the fast-casual restaurant includes a 90-minute dining window, a choice of entree and side dish, and access to exclusive merchandise and Barbie-branded interactive activities, from a life-size Barbie box to roller skating. To revive the great Minnesota supper club tradition while giving humble classics (think platters and prime rib) a fresh update. Pimento on the Lake (3000 Bde Maka Ska Pkwy., Mpls., pimento.com) will offer beachy twists on Pimento Jamaican Kitchen's popular food and drink menu. Pimento's Tomme Beevas joined forces with the team from Lola on the Lake, which operated the Bde Maka Ska concessions building before it burned down in 2019.

Also in the basement, tucked behind a curtain in the back corner is Mezcaleria, an intimate candlelit Oaxacan-style mezcal bar. Here, traditional dishes are enticingly elevated—such as the juicy bone-in pork chop topped with a sweet-and-spicy pineapple medley. Surf fans will love the seared-to-perfection walleye fillet and creamy mushroom risotto. The handcrafted cocktails and after-dinner drinks are equally appealing, like the Lavender Lady, made with crème de violette and a frothy egg-white top. "Its sheer enormity, with four bars, four patios, and multiple dining rooms, coupled with not just one but two floods in our first year, proved too great of a challenge to overcome during this economic slowdown," the post said.

“(We’ll) try to activate that stage as many nights as we can and kind of make this an entertainment destination as well as food and beverage,” Donatell said. After 30 years of being known as Dangerfield’s Restaurant, the historic restaurant location on First Avenue in Shakopee is entering a new chapter. A nod to Prohibition-era Shakopee, the likes of which John Dillinger and the notorious “Baby Face” Nelson would frequent. "It's almost like a tribute to somebody in his industry."

The supper-club-style Shakopee House opened late last fall, and reimagined itself once again with a Cajun and Creole menu earlier this year. The size of the space (with two floors and four patios), two floods and the economic challenges facing restaurants are the reasons for the closure, wrote Tony Donatell, owner of the Hospitality Collective restaurant group, on social media. "We missed the target of what this community was looking for, didn't hold ourselves to the standard we set, and made changes too late." With his family’s permission, Cumberbatch’s dream has now been brought back to life with the creation of Rum Row.

The drink menu has been updated, as well, with more whiskeys and spirits being added to the bar as well as a brand new wine list. Classic, prohibition-era cocktails are also a focus, Donatell added, with signature cocktails looking to become a priority in the future when the restaurant is fully switched over. The main dining space will be remodeled to look like a supper club of the era. A stage will also be set up in the main dining room, where live entertainment like cabaret shows, comedy shows, “burlesque brunches” and jazz performances can be put on for guests. Donatell said plans for Shakopee House are to do “their version” of a supper club, heavily inspired by 1940s-era supper clubs and speakeasies.

The supper club is in the transition process, still running under the name Dangerfield’s, and looks to be fully rebranded with the new name by mid-November. The suitcase belonged to Lawrence H. Cumberbatch, a bartender who used to work in the building. Findings inside are on display near a staircase leading down to Rum Row. The suitcase is on display as you make your way down the staircase, where bamboo-lined walls and a faux canopy of greenery melt your worries away.

At the same time, it’s an ode to the restaurants past. During renovations, the team discovered a suitcase in the walls. Inside were post cards, bottles of rum and drink recipes.

A Little History About the Port

It is located at the extreme northeastern tip of this 27-mile-long barrier island. The cruise port is in sheltered waters at the entrance to Galveston Bay and the start of the Houston Ship Channel. It is just a short minute sail to reach the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Families can take a walking tour of the city’s historic downtown area, The Strand, which is home to beautiful Victorian architecture, museums, and unique shops. The Strand is also the center of Galveston’s seasonal celebrations, including Mardis Gras and the annual ‘Dickens on the Strand’ festival.

Galveston's fourth/newest cruise terminal project was unanimously voted at the Board's October 31st meeting and was included in the Port's "20-Year Strategic Master Plan" (2019-adopted). It was also announced that the port and MSC are negotiating an agreement related to the Pier 16 Terminal. The deal also included building a new/shared cruise terminal with capacity to handle a vessel similarly sized or bigger than Disney's Magic-Wonder boats. In 2017 the number grew to 950,000 (economic impact USD 2,3 billion) supporting local jobs. Generated jobs are 20,000 (paying over USD 1,1 billion in total income).

Here are a few attractions to tempt you to stay a few nights and enjoy this top resort. At the check-in desk, you will need to present your passport and ticket info, along with any visa/ESTA required. You will also be asked to provide a credit card for the settlement of your account during or at the end of your cruise.

Galveston Island’s Historic Pleasure Pier is a 1,000-foot-long amusement park that sits over the sea about a six-minute drive from the Port of Galveston. For $30 per person, you can get all-access all-day to this recently renovated nexus of fun, offering food, shops, carnival games, and 15 rides (including a roller coaster!). Houston has two main airports, William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), both of which host domestic and international flights. Houston Hobby is generally more conveniently positioned, only 45 miles (about 50 minutes) from the port.

When completed, the newest/4th MSC Cruise Terminal is expected to generate an additional 925 jobs, ~US$177M in revenues, ~US$21M in local purchases. There are two terminals at the Port of Galveston so it is important to know which terminal your cruise ship will be using or you might try to drop your luggage off at the wrong one (like we did!). Thankfully there are lots of staff around to help guide you to the right location so don’t be afraid to ask questions, if only to confirm you are indeed in the right place. Disney Wonder is currently based in Galveston cruise port and offers a choice of cruise itineraries for families. In 2018, Disney signed a new option for two additional 5-year periods and was projected to double its sailings out of Galveston by 2028. Royal Caribbean is heavily invested in the Galveston cruise port with the development of the new third terminal to accommodate the larger Oasis-class cruise ships.

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, Galveston is sure to provide the stating point of an amazing cruise experience. Curated excursions include tours of plantations such as the Oak Alley, Frogmore and Rosedown and opportunities to explore historic towns and beautiful gardens. All three cruise lines offer similar itineraries along the river, so we recommend looking into the ships, the amenities, and what's included in the rate (like pre-departure hotel stays and excursions) to help make your decision.
